Murmurtale What Murmurtale is
Murmurtale is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. You click into a text field in the app you already write in, hold a key, speak, and release — and finished prose lands where your cursor was. Spoken punctuation becomes real punctuation, a new speaker starts a new paragraph with quotation marks, and the names in your world are spelled the way you taught them.
It runs on your Mac by default. Speech and cleanup happen on your device, so nothing you dictate has to leave it. An optional cloud engine is available for harder audio, but you choose it — it is never on unless you turn it on.
Why it exists
General-purpose dictation is built to save you typing, and it does. But for fiction it hands you a bill: one run-on block of text, dialogue with no quotes and no paragraph break for the new speaker, the words “comma” and “period” sitting in the sentence, and character names guessed wrong. You stop writing and start reformatting — and the speed you gained goes right back out.
Murmurtale exists to remove that cleanup tax. It does the mechanical reshaping a fiction draft needs — punctuation, paragraphing, dialogue formatting, and the spelling of your names — so the words arrive as prose instead of a transcript. That is the whole job.
Who it's for
Novelists and short-fiction writers who draft by talking, or who want to. Writers who dictate on walks, who have wrists that ache after a long session, or who simply think out loud better than they type. If you write dialogue-heavy scenes and dread cleaning up the transcript afterward, Murmurtale was built for your workflow.
Mac first, and honest about it
Murmurtale is a Mac app today. iOS and iPadOS share the same core and are tracked as later scope — they are not available yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. You will not find invented reviews, inflated user numbers, borrowed logos, or a fake company history here. It is built for fiction writers, in the open, and the Help Center tells you exactly what does and does not work today.
